"It would be bad enough if the daughter I loved so well [were] lying beside her grandmother in Greenwood Cemetery, but this suspense and uncertainty are 1,000 times worse." - Francis Arnold, Dorothy's father

It was the great mystery of its time and still reads like an episode of Law and Order today. In December 1910, a wealthy young woman, thought to be sheltered and above reproach, goes missing shortly after being seen in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The police are called in and begin to question those closest to her, only to have her father, a wealthy manufacturer, insist it must be foul play and that his daughter was on good terms with her entire family. Likewise, he claims that though she was in her mid-20s and in the prime of life, she had no serious romantic attachments. The mother tearfully backs these claims up.

Eventually, far different information leaks out, like the fact that the victim was an aspiring writer who kept much about her work a secret, that she had been trying to cut ties with her family for some time, and, most interesting of all, that there certainly was a boyfriend, and that her family had tried to hide their relationship. For a time, all eyes are on the romantic interest, who is significantly older but a longtime friend of the family. In fact, the victim's brother is seen in beautiful Florence, Italy, beating the boyfriend up in a failed attempt to get more information about his sister's disappearance. Letters surface, as do photographs, but ultimately nothing to indicate the he had anything at all to do with her disappearance. Finally, everyone gives up and turns their attentions elsewhere.

The story of The Disappearance of Dorothy Arnold: The Unsolved Mystery of the American Socialite Who Vanished in 1910 is definitely strange. The e-book provided in a concise manner a history of the disappearance of Dorthy Arnold. It's strange because she didn't take any jewelry or close that she could possibly pawn for money. She didn't destroy her intimate correspondence. Yet why did her father and brother tell so many different stories? Why did her father believe she was dead? Did she live for many more years? I doubt that after reading the book whether you will be sure either of what happened to her. I lean towards a messed up abortion, still there are many other possibilities. At least the story is interesting because of the time period and to compare how a missing person case was handled then to how it might be handled now.

The Disappearance of Dorothy Arnold The Unsolved Mystery of the American Socialite Who Vanished in 1910 (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Jim D Johnston Books Reviews

This was an interesting read about a missing young woman. Police investigating techniques have certainly improved over the years. I do wonder what the truth was behind Dorothy's disappearance.
I did not find the book very interesting . And if memory serves me right I don't believe they ever really cleared up the Mystery of her disappearance. It was said she had to go through park to get home my guesses something happened during that walk in the park.
I never heard of this story, but it was really engrossing, and I can totally understand why it was one of the biggest scandals and mysteries of the early 20th century. All the moving parts and confusion will leave you wondering what happened and trying to come up with a best guess for yourself.
December 12, 1910 was a day never to be forgotten by the Arnold family their daughter, Dorothy disappeared without a trace.
She was never to be seen or heard from again. This interesting book is about the known details of her disappearance and the
efforts of her family and many others to find her. If you like a good mystery, this book is for you.
The disappearenceb of Dorothy Arnold is as perplexing today as it was in 1910. A lot of things don't make sense. Why did the family wait so long before reporting her missing? Her purchases that day suggest a trip-a box of chocolates to eat and a book to read enroute to her destination. An abortion doctor and his confession of accidental death and cremation. Her mother and brother setting off to Europe just after the disappearence. After reading this book, my own theory is she did go on a trip for an abortion and the family did all they could to lead police away from their shame.
The author is stated as Charles River Editors, i.e a publishong house, not a person who is a writer - and that would be correct. The main body of the text is actually quotations (sometimes quite long) from (among others) newspapers of the day and from a book about the case written in 1960. Charles River Editors haven't written that much.
That said, the story in itself is intriguing, and the editors have edited the material at hand in an adequate way. The problem is - Wikipedia does it better - and with bits of extra information.

I won't give it two stars, I can't say I didn't like it, but the three stars are for the story, not the book.
One of my abiding interests for years has been real-life mysteries (R.I.P., Robert Stack and Dennis Farina). Although I may have read of Dorothy Arnold in the distant past, only recently have I become familiar with the particulars of the case.
Dorothy Arnold was a daughter from a prominent New York City family who disappeared while shopping on the morning of December 12, 1910. This is one of those cases that generate sensational headlines and intense investigations at the time, but are forgotten within a few years as no new information or a definitive solution arise, except by those personally connected - Natalie Holloway in our own day.
What makes the case interesting is not so much Arnold's disappearance as the glimpse of the society and mores of days gone by. The Arnolds are so concerned about their reputation that finding their daughter almost takes second place, to the point that they refused to go to the police, relying on family lawyers to investigate - if, as they say, the first 48 hours are crucial to solving a mystery, then the Arnolds probably lost any chance of finding Dorothy. When they finally did go to the police, they were treated with deference and confidentiality, keeping things out of the newspapers that might have helped in the search but tarnished the family reputation. And later on, the published theories of the parties involved could only confuse matters.
There is other information included that was not in the chapter I read on Dorothy Arnold earlier this year, but I think I've already skated too close to SPOILER territory as it is.
IMO, I think Dorothy's story ended in Pittsburgh, but Mrs. Anna Miller is an intriguing possibility....Piqued your interest? Good! 😀
